I work on instinct. I find beauty in spontaneity. I believe in memory living in the body, and I am trying critically to quiet my ego so I may listen to what my physicality has to teach me.
My choreographies are multidisciplinary, emphasizing the importance of incorporating multiple dimensions of sensorial experience. Critically designing the space in which dancers perform and audiences witness is what brings the work into an depthful, immersive place.
I am interested in how to fabricate sensation in the body that will stimulate a corresponding emotional reaction reminiscent of events that are in the body’s lived history. The subconscious feels like the spark to all other explorative aspects of my process. In a spiritual way, I believe that there is knowledge in the body that can be brought out of an unconscious realm through artful spontaneity. The movement I create is a vessel for me to enter that portion of my mind. Once I am in, I can navigate infinite possible facets of life that interest me. Mainly, these are things of queer identity. I am interested in using my process to understand my body’s memory of physical intimacy, living in a transgender body, being raised as a woman, and what it is like to be loved and known.
My art is theatrical, as it pushes to the edge of drama and quiet sensation. My art is an offering to myself, my dancers, and my audiences to invest in grasping onto who we are, and what we know to be true, beyond our surface.
